Commodore’s Report

by Scott Wells, LCYC Commodore

First, on behalf of a grateful LCYC membership, let me offer thanks to our outgoing Commodore (Elizabeth Bentzen), outgoing Rear Commodore (Mike Samulin), the outgoing Board of Governors (Debbie Fogle, Bubba Harris, Jean Junker, Ed Miller), the many committee chairs and volunteers. This group persevered through a very difficult year and with courage made the many difficult decisions that had to made to keep our club running smoothly. For many of these decisions there was no precedent to look back to. Thank you for attending the many “virtual” meetings, yes we learned how to do that as well, tirelessly, without complaining and always keeping the club and its membership in the forefront.

Turning the calendar to 2021…finally! We look forward to the opportunity to go sailing this year and the club will do everything in its power to facilitate that activity. Participation in racing is at an all time high. Day sailing and fun sailing on the lake continues to increase. Activity on the docks is high and most boats are receiving a lot of love and attention. Turns out that sailing is one of things we can still do. We are so lucky! If you have not tried racing yet, reach out to our Race Director Rick Mella. Rick will be happy to talk you through signing up and what to expect on race day. He will also put you in touch with someone from a similar fleet to continue with on-the-water help.

Docks and Grounds: Our in-house Docks and Grounds team leader Julian Craven has done a marvelous job maintaining and improving our club. Re-floating A-Dock is complete. Repairs to the Super-Dock have been made. Emergency cable replacements due to storm damage is complete. Weekly upkeep of the grounds including mowing, trash removal, pool cleaning, etc. is done without fail. It is so very nice to arrive at the club and be able to enjoy our shared passion of sailing without having to first mow the grass. It’s just awesome. When you see Julian and his team give them a shout-out and thanks for the work they do for us every week.

Volunteering: It is the thing that makes our club special and the glue that holds it all together. A past Commodore (Bill McVey) once said, that if you want to meet new people and make some new friends sign-up and volunteer for something. You know what, he is right. There are so many interesting people from diverse backgrounds that are part of our membership. Introduce yourself to someone new this month and then do it every month. Offer to help with a project or better yet ask for help with a project. Most of us are more than happy to “mess about with boats” anyway and game for a good excuse to do more of it. You will be glad you did!

Closing out my first Commodore’s report for 2021, let me say that I am excited to be your Commodore and energized by the adventure that awaits. I tip my hat to those who came before in this role as evidenced by the amazing club that has blossomed through the years. My time at the helm will be brief and with your help we will make it a memorable voyage.

Just Go Sailing!

2021 Rules Changes

by Renee Kizziar, Treasurer

During the October 2020 meeting, the Board of Governors added some rules to the Club’s Rules and the Slip, Dock, and Storage Utilization Rules. Both of these are included in your 2021 Directory. These documents are also available on the Club’s web site, www.lcyc.net. The Rules on under info/membership. The Slip Rules are under info/marina. The only change to the Bylaws was a title change from Rear Commodore for Sail to Race Director.

The Rules were revised to add additional requirements for launching from the Club’s ramp. A checklist for Launch Safety Requirements was also added. If you launch from a boat at our marina, you need to look at these revisions. The launch rules are G and H in section II Facilities. The checklist has been added as Appendix I.

The Slip Rules were revised to address storage on E Dock. Rules were not revised when this over-the-water dry storage was implemented. Experience provided information that was the basis for these new rules. These revisions were added at the end as Section X – E Dock. These rules will be of particular interest to those who may want to store small boats on E Dock.

If you would like to see the full language of the revisions, send me an e-mail at treasurer@lcyc.net. Members of the 2020 Board can also address questions you may have.
