Commodore’s Report

by Elizabeth Bentzen, LCYC Commodore

I want to thank everyone who has volunteered to work the LCYC gate. We reduced unauthorized access to the club and recruited some potential new members. We will continue to monitor gate access as long as there are volunteers and it seems necessary.

The US Army Corps of Engineers at Canyon Lake has temporarily closed their recreational parks on weekends and holidays to reduce large crowds. Governor Abbott has required face coverings when inside businesses and outdoors when distancing is not possible, and limited outdoor gatherings to 10 people or fewer. These interventions were in response to the spike in COVID cases and hospitalizations in the area. I would encourage all members and their guests when at LCYC to continue to practice physical distancing, hand washing and wearing a face covering when physical distancing is not possible. Please avoid gathering in large groups other than family units on the property. I ask that you be considerate with the number of guests you bring to the Club so that we can continue to be a safe place for members and their families to enjoy during this time.

While the Club has not sponsored events, it is great to see so many members getting outdoors on their boats. I appreciate the many emails from Club members supporting Board decisions, even as some of our favorite events are cancelled. These decisions were have not been made lightly, but are made to do our part to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 and keep our members and employees safe. We will continue to monitor state and local guidelines and mandates as we consider future events.

Please remember to stay safe at the Club and on the water!

Port Captains

by Margaret McGill and Mindy Rogers, Co-Port Captains

Greetings to LCYC members! Port Captains have been busy participating in the gate monitoring activities for the past few weeks, since there’s nothing going on in the club house. It is so gratifying to see the response of club members to the efforts of the Board of Governors, led by our courageous Commodore, Elizabeth Bentzen, to control access to our club property by unauthorized persons. Everyone is cheerful and positive about changes to keep the club in good condition and to keep members and staff as safe as possible. Full disclosure, she is my daughter, and I am very proud of her leadership in this unprecedented situation. Your support means a lot.

Everyone please stay safe and keep sailing!

Series & Event Racing

by Rick Mella, Rear Commodore of Sail

The LCYC Board has approved COVID-19 Task Force recommendations.

Please adhere to all the safety guidelines for protecting ourselves against Coronavirus so that we can stay safe and return to sailing. Beginning with the 4th of July Long Distance race, all skippers are required to sign and submit the “Regatta Waiver and Release of Liability” found on LCYC website when registering for future regattas. To apply social distance, Skipper’s meeting for the Summer Series will be hosted on line a day prior to each race. Skippers will be notified by email after signing up for the series.

Sailing World magazine has published an article about Lakewood’s new fleet of RS21s sailboats in their Summer 2020, volume 59, no 587 magazine. The article covers Lakewood’s goal of how to get younger members into team & match racing along with social activities. Their process in acquiring new sailboats could provide a roadmap that LCYC may seek to follow for recruiting new members and developing future sailors.
